One of the issues I found with having H3C/3Com now HP products over the last few years is the lack of support for senarios that are described but never documented. While desciption of features exist configuration guides or FAQ seem non-existent. I recently purchased a S7500 controller blade at work for our new core to move over our existing 7760 series Access Points from 3CRUS2475 switches over to a more robust solution designed to handle our 70+ APs. I just wanted to take this time to document the way 7760 discovered the 3CRUS2475.
- 3Com Access Point sends a UDP port 42004 to broadcast searching for Wireless Switch with the model number of the access point
- DNS Discovery for hostname 3ComUWS: 1 DNS request stops if no name found

Great information. I was wondering if you worked with the AP 8760? I’m working on attaching them to a WX5004. However, I can not get them to work correctly. I seeing a different UDP packet being transmitted 5005. Which I believe is the UDP packet for the Trapeze OEM product 3Com had. With the 7760s did you have to install a different code set on the APs? Let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, I had to update the firmware to the H3C fit mode. Finding the conversion is a little harder to find since the 3Com site was been removed. But under the new HP Support Lookup you look under the A3000 or A5000 wireless controller. I think you need to use the 3150 fit conversion as the 8760 is based on 3150 radio. I have one in my office that I need to upgrade anyways so I will try and test it out.

Hello,
I am looking to convert 4 3COM 8750 AP’s to FIT-mode. Do you know wich conversion I have to use, and where I can download it? I cannot seem to find it.
Thanks in advance!

Well the 8750 AP was the managed access point line right before the 7760/8760, this means they can only be managed with a WX1200/WX2200/WX4400 series controllers. I don’t believe it was ever supported on the newer WX3000/WX5000 controllers. So if you have a WX4400 controller this should work fine, hope this helps.

I have a WX3010 and i updated it with A3000_5.20.R3111P11 file in this link: http://goo.gl/CDeY2
Then i updated all my AP’s 3COM 8760 with Wireless_3150_FIT_Conversion_Jan_25_2010 downloaded in the same link (Fat to Fit convertion) connected directly to WLC.
Then, discovery process i added a DNS entry:
3comwlc.domain.com –> IP Wireless Controller.
Wireless Controller have two IP’s: Switch Engine and Wireless Engine.
My AP’s are on diferent vlans.
